Dear President, your Excellency,

With deep concern I have learnt that in the course of the protests that have taken place in Tibet since past March 2008 a large number of Tibetans have been imprisoned or are unaccounted for. I am particularly concerned about those Tibetans that are held without formal charges, or who have been imprisoned only because they peacefully voiced their dissent.

Dear President, I urge you to release immediately and unconditionally all those Tibetans who have expressed their opinion in a peaceful manner. I request you to guarantee for all others the right to due process, which means access to legal representation and fair and open proceedings while in court.

Please urge the relevant authorities not to use torture or other ill-treatment and reveal the whereabouts of those missing. Please also ensure access to medical treatment if detainees so require.

Dear President, I urge the government of the People's Republic of China to comply with fundamental standards of international human rights and to resolve the issue of Tibet in a peaceful way, through dialogue and respect for the Tibetan people. Thank you.

Yours faithfully
